Don't you feel good when your car is clean and all shined up? A well-kept car looks great rolling down the street or sitting in your driveway, and you'd swear it even drives better. But if you want to take your ride all the way to beautiful, you also should to address the dirt and grime under the hood. Even though the engine bay is not exposed to the elements—at least not from above—debris and dust creep in from openings around the hood and the vehicle's front end.
Cleaning your engine might sound daunting—how do you wash a big hunk of metal and plastic? Here's how to clean your engine quickly and efficiently. Ideally, pick a warm day.
Warmer weather, especially low humidity with some wind, will help dry the engine and components after cleaning. If the car was running, flip the hood up and allow the engine to cool for at least 15 minutes. Hot engine components can not only burn you, but they can also be damaged by rapid contraction if sprayed with cool water.
Step 3: Remove. Remove any plastic covers under the hood. These can be scrubbed separately. Also remove the negative terminal from the battery.
This will help protect the electrical components from getting damaged if they get wet. Using plastic bags, cover any sensitive electrical components, such as the battery, ignition wires, and engine control unit. If there's an exposed engine air intake under the hood, you'll want to cover that as well. If you feel like you'll be particularly careful with your rinsing, then you can skip this step. However, protecting these electronics will allow you to clean more thoroughly with less risk of damaging anything.
Thoroughly spray the entire engine compartment with degreaser. Any household degreaser will work, whether it's a kitchen cleaner or a purpose-made engine degreaser.
We've used Simple Green we like its eco-friendly formula. Depending on how dirty your engine is, you may not need to scrub.
However, some areas, like the valve cover, may have years of caked-on oil and dirt. A small brush with synthetic—not metallic—bristles will go a long way toward working the degreaser in and cleaning away the gunk. Add more degreaser if needed. If you have a power washer, you can use it on a light setting, but a standard hose will work as well. Or you can use the sprayer at the local DIY carwash.
Rinse the entire compartment, working from back to front, washing away all degreaser. If you have compressed air available to you, you can blast air in the nooks and crannies to remove excess water.
If not, wipe everything you can reach with a shop towel or rag. This will not only remove water but will also help remove any remaining grime. Reinstall the negative terminal what is hypoglycemia and how is it treated the battery and remove the bags covering the electrical components. The key to making this project simple is not letting your engine compartment get too dirty in the first place. A quick degreasing every year or two will help keep your engine looking clean with no more than an hour of work.
Your ride's engine may never look as sexy as the one above, but a gleaming engine bay is guaranteed to make you feel happy. New Cars. Buyer's Guide. Type keyword s to search. Today's Top Stories. The warmth of the exhaust lets the combustion chambers warm up quickly, while the spent, inert gases keep the chambers from getting too hot when the engine fully warms up.
Whether mechanical or electronic, EGR valves open and close to control the gas flow. If left open, the excess vacuum will cause the engine to act like it wants to stall, idling roughly or surging. If the valve stays closed, detonation could occur in the combustion chambers; this knocking or pinging will lower mileage and the lifespan of the engine.
To smooth a rough idle, or hesitant or surging acceleration, and reduce knocking, clean your EGR valve. To clean your EGR valve, start by cleaning the vacuum hose with carburetor cleaner or a pipe cleaner. Then, unbolt the valve, and clean the return tube and entry port using carburetor cleaner, and a toothbrush or pipe cleaner. If you have an electronic EGR valve, make sure to disconnect the negative battery cable, and remove any sensors and electrical connections before unbolting the valve.
After cleaning, reinstall the valve and reattach the vacuum hose. Did this summary help you? Yes No. Log in Social login does not work in incognito and private browsers. Please log in with your username or email to continue.
Remove the vacuum hose and inspect closely for wear cracks or weak spots , then clean out the carbon deposits either with a spray can of carburetor cleaner or with a pipe cleaner if the deposits are hardened or compacted. Inspect the EGR valve for damage.
Loosen any bolts fastening the EGR valve to the engine. Inspect the gasket lining the bottom plate of the valve. If it's not frayed or cracked, you can reuse it. Clean the return tube and gas entry port. If there is a lot of carbon build up around the EGR valve, you may also want to just save yourself some time and replace it with a new one. Clean out the entry port. The entry port is where the valve tubes connect to the engine usually the intake manifold while the EGR valve is off.
Reinstall the EGR valve. Check to ensure the vacuum diaphragm moves freely, reinstall the EGR valve and reattach the exhaust return and vacuum hoses. Method 2 of Disconnect the negative battery cable. By removing the negative battery cable from the battery, you ensure no current is flowing through the system and avoid short-circuiting the electronic component that controls the valve.
Disengage and remove any sensors and electrical connections along with any hoses. Spray the valve and hoses with carburetor cleaner, using a brush to clean off the carbon buildup out of any hoses and small hole with the pintle. Do NOT spray the electrical connections or sensors with the cleaner. However, you may want to purchase a can of electronics cleaner and di-electric grease if the connectors appear to be corroded.
Reinstall the EGR valve using the gasket and bolts, and reconnect the electrical connections and sensors with any hoses. Include your email address to get a message when this question is answered. By using this service, some information may be shared with YouTube.
Whether spraying or soaking the valve, if you intend to reuse the gasket, keep it clean and dry, as the cleaner may damage the gasket. Helpful 64 Not Helpful Simply replacing the EGR valve instead of cleaning it may save you a lot of time and frustration. Helpful 10 Not Helpful If you can separate the EGR valve from all other assembly pieces hoses or electronic connections , you may opt to soak the valve in carburetor cleaner rather than spraying it to ensure any carbon buildup is loosened and washed out inside and out.
Helpful 1 Not Helpful 1. Read your owner's manual for specific maintenance schedules, but you can generally inspect your EGR valve every 12, to 15, miles 19, to 24, km. If you clean your EGR valve and it seems to get clogged sooner, have your mechanic run a diagnostic.
Your engine may need a more thorough tune-up to be creating so much carbon so quickly. Helpful 5 Not Helpful Inspect and replace the EGR valve while outdoors, or in a well-ventilated area, to reduce exposure to fumes from the carburetor cleaner or exhaust.
